Controversal Comments are put on-line For Free by Advocacy Group so Leary can?t profit on Autism exploitation
 
New York NY. Mark Anthony Ramirez of Autism United, one of the largest advocacy groups that represents over 50,000 parents from coast to coast, is calling off a nationwide boycott planned against Dennis Leary, and accepting his apology for harming the autism community with his comments. The group is calling for the comedian to either delete the chapter that targets autism or donate a portion of the proceeds from the book to assist children diagnosed with autism. To counter claims by Leary that his comments have been taken out of context, and to assure that he does not profit from the controversy, the group has put the offending chapter on-line for free on web sites across the nation.

Autism United acknowledges Denis Leary for his belated apology for the harm done by his statements about people with autism and their families made in his recently published book, “Why We Suck”. “I feel that Denis’ apology was enough” said comedian Mark Anthony Ramirez, a spokesperson for Autism United and Gabby’s Kids, and the father of a child diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, “But his claim that his comments were taken out of context is a veiled attempt to elicit more sales.”

“As a parent of a child with autism, I feel he owes the autism community the money he is making for using what has quickly become an epidemic in our country as a cheap ploy to sell his book,” said Ramirez. “He should donate a portion of his sales to assist children with autism.”

Leary recently joined Michael Savage, and CBS’s Big Brother program in what seems to be an unfortunate trend among celebrities to say grossly uninformed and damaging statements about people with autism and their families. In his current book, Leary echoed Michael Savage’s assertion that autism is the result of poor parenting, and suggests that parental drug abuse probably plays a role in causing autism.  “It is obvious he wrote this chapter to ensure sales via outrage,” said Ramirez, “It is a sad attempt to draw attention to his book– which is filled with his wild, unfunny machinations.”

Leary also asserts incorrectly that people with autism all have extraordinary abilities of some kind similar to the character in the movie Rain Man.

Leary has claimed that the brief statements published in the media have been taken out of context, and must be read in conjunction with the rest of his book to be understood correctly. Given the controversy his statements have caused, Autism United has posted the entirety of the Autism Schmautism chapter from Leary’s book in an attempt to provide the context that Leary claims is lacking. US law allows for the publication of copyrighted material according to the fair use doctrine for purposes of education, criticism and comment, which is our intention. We will let the public decide for themselves Leary’s intent.

“As a fellow comedian I respect Denis’ right to free speech and expression, but this chapter in his book, and his statements thereafter, seriously put his integrity in question,” said Ramirez.
